Reviews - Jason Darling - Vintage Guitar
Jason Darling is a fine singer/songwriter who ruminates on everything
from the state of rock and roll ("Hip-Hop Hooray") to tales of lost
love ("Broken Ashtray") to drinking too much ("Porcelain Pillow"). His
writing style is smart lyrically, and musically it stacks up as a nice
mix of folk music and alternative rock. Most of the songs are driven
by acoustic guitar, with some really nice slide being added on cuts
like "One By One", and the very cool fingerpicked blues of "Ride My
Train." The latter cut is an amazing blues piece with only three lines
that are surrounded by some very cool playing.
Vocally, Darling sometimes sounds like a lazy folksinger. And I mean
that in a good way! At times, he brings to mind Ray Davies of the Kinks.
The CD was recorded at the Lincoln Lounge in Venice, California. I'm
not sure if that's an actual lounge, or a clever name for a studio,
but either way, the intimate feel of the recording makes it sound like
it could easily have been done at a lounge.
All in all, a splendid album. Fans of singer/songwriters will love this.
