Reviews - Jason Darling - Shepherd Express
Singer, sogwriter, and guitarist Jason Darling used to carry around
a phrase in his wallet that read: "Simplicity is complexity." Given
that nugget of information, it makes sense that Underground, on which
he plays all the instruments on songs he wrote, arranged and produced,
floats out of the speakers like a low-key affair. The Dylan comparisons
come easily, and many of these songs reflect Darling's experience of
living in New York and sleeping on friends' couches. Biting sarcasm
("Hip Hop Hooray"), truthfully funny lyrics ("Porcelain Pillow") and
judicious use of traditional slide-guitar blues ("Ride My Train") may
just signal the arrival of a new underground rock-folkie hero.
